CAMDEN, MAINE — April 28th, 2026 — Stuart and Marianne Smith, longtime leaders in Maine’s hospitality and outdoor recreation industries, have been named recipients of the Governor’s Award for Tourism Excellence, presented by the Maine Office of Tourism and the Maine Tourism Association.
This prestigious award recognizes individuals whose leadership, vision, and commitment have made a lasting impact on Maine’s tourism industry. For more than four decades, the Smiths have played a defining rolein shaping the Midcoast Maine experience through both their outdoor retail business, Maine Sport Outfitters, and their boutique hotel group, Bay View Collection.
From introducing generations of visitors to Maine’s natural beauty through outdoor recreation to developing thoughtfully designed lodging experiences in Camden and Rockport, the Smiths have consistently elevated the standard of hospitality in the region. Their properties are known for their strong sense of place, authentic guest experiences, and attention to detail that reflects the character of coastal Maine.
Beyond their business accomplishments, Stuart and Marianne are widely recognized for their deep commitment to community. They have generously supported numerous local organizations and played a key role in transformative projects such as the Midcoast Recreation Center, which they helped develop and ultimately donated to a nonprofit organization. Their longstanding involvement in local education, including service on the school board and support for the development of a new regional high school, reflects their belief in investing in future generations.
The Smiths’ connection to the Midcoast region is also deeply personal. They raised their three sons in Camden, all of whom have gone on to build successful careers of their own. In a meaningful continuation of the family’s legacy, their middle son, Tyler, returned to Maine after a career as an engineer with Boeing to join and support the family business.
