From an unusual state flower to a soft drink with a famously distinct flavor, here are five Maine facts you might not know.

1. Maine’s State Flower Isn’t Actually a Flower

Maine’s official floral emblem is the white pine cone and tassel. It was chosen to represent the white pine forests that have played an important role in Maine’s history and landscape.

The white pine is also Maine’s official state tree—which makes sense for a place known as the Pine Tree State.

2. The Whoopie Pie Is Maine’s Official State Treat

Two small chocolate cakes with a layer of creamy filling in the middle make up Maine’s official state treat: the whoopie pie.

The whoopie pie earned the title in 2011, but it isn’t Maine’s official dessert. That honor belongs to blueberry pie made with wild Maine blueberries. Apparently, there was room for both.

3. Moxie Is the Official State Soft Drink

Known for its bold and slightly bitter flavor, Moxie became Maine’s official state soft drink in 2005.

It was created by Maine-born Dr. Augustin Thompson of Union and was originally sold as a medicinal drink. Today, it remains a Maine classic—and something every visitor should try at least once.

4. “Dirigo” Means “I Lead”

You may have noticed the word “Dirigo” on Maine’s state seal, signs or local businesses. It is Maine’s official state motto and is Latin for “I lead” or “I guide.”

The motto is connected to Maine’s history of holding its elections early in the year, which once gave the state a reputation for helping guide the country’s political direction.

5. Maine’s State Bird Is the Chickadee

Small, curious and easy to recognize by its black cap and white cheeks, the chickadee is Maine’s official state bird.

Chickadees can be spotted throughout the state year-round, including during Maine’s cold winters. Listen for their familiar call while walking through the woods or enjoying your morning coffee outside.
